Mosport Wreckage

Mosport does not screw around. Every incident at that place is a big one. A lot of us found that out this weekend, either by being in one or just seeing one go down in front of them. The one making the rounds on the forums and the paddock big time is the turn 1 incident of race 2. This was my view of it:

That wreck wiped out a LOT of fast guys in the pack. My car being pretty evil in the high speed stuff, which is just about everywhere at Mosport, that crash was helpful to me big time as far as positions go, but you should never be happy to see a competitor in a wreck. Luckily everybody was ok apart from a concussion sustained when LaRocca's front wing assembly departed his car at high speed, vertically, and landed on Zach Craigo's face. (clearly visible on the above onboard) Everybody's fine though and back home.

But Mosport is a place that really opens your eyes especially to handling cause and effect when the car isn't where you would like it to be. I am probably a little too tentative with handling changes. I often shy away from big changes, even when the car could use them. It has come from a history of making too many changes at once to the car when I was younger and getting burned every time. A car going from very loose to even worse under steer is worse to the confidence of a driver than a car that has chronic over steer from start to finish. So we chased a high speed over steer all weekend that got even worse on Saturday in the hundred degree heat when the track greased up even worse. The entire event was held in record setting heat, and the humidity was through the roof. Not exactly ideal, but you deal with the hand you're dealt.

So even with all that I did my best to keep the car on the track and out of the wall, the former of which I did alright at and the latter of which was perfect. I went off in qualifying two but managed to save it and just take a little detour through the beautiful scenery on the outside of turn 5A and B. We ended up coming home with an 8th and 6th place effort, respectively on the weekend. At a track where I know I hadn't even really started to push the car's limits because of tentativeness and a car that wasn't up to running at it's limits, it's a better result than I had expected. We're now 9th in points, and meeting my goal of a top 10 points run this season. You can see some video action in these videos, and follow me a bit through Saturday's events.

I'd also like to say congratulations to my sister Alli and brother in law Aaron on the arrival of my new nephew, Maximus Richard. He's going to be an awesome little dude. Mommy, daddy and the new baby are resting comfortably at the hospital now.
